#bushCON Recap: Be on purpose

Inspired by yesterday's #bushCON event, "Our Minnesota" Cascading Conversations Tour  Advance Team Co-Coordinator, Taylor Vollmer, shares his insights and learning from a day meant to equip, inspire, and connect. Read more below and consider joining the Minnesota Rising Cascading Conversations Tour to continue the conversation this summer!

Walking away from the inaugural bushCONNECT event, a single thought resonated within me: be on purpose. A double entendre, its more-rehearsed interpretation hit me right out of the gates (or, well, doors) – be on purpose, exist for a reason. What’s more is that my reflection ended in my appreciation of the other end of the entendre, the end which I had hardly before considered: being on purpose.

In his keynote interview, Steve Johnson posed what he believes essential to environments that foster the development of good ideas. From Minnesota Rising’s own Fail Lab to tours of Izzy’s Ice Cream’s new manufacturing facility or from the Theater of Public Policy’s improv crash course to the Initiative Foundation’s conversation on how not to have a conversation, thirty breakout sessions highlighted local organizations’ initiation of innovation, response to failure, and emphasis on learning.
The Bush Foundation’s desire with bushCON was not to stop at inspiring its attendants. Personally, I cannot even count the number of events or conferences where I walked away feeling encouraged and keen to make changes, only having little clarity as to how that might look. To be on purpose is to understand my incapabilities along with my abilities as they align with my personal mission. To be fully equipped, then, necessarily includes connecting with others so that my visions can reach their potential.
True to its mission, #bushCON inspired, equipped, and connected each of its 1,200 attendees. If you want to learn more about what shook out at the event this past Monday, check out bushconnect.org!

Why Minnesota Rising Matters [to]: Eric Sannerud

Minnesota Rising is excited to celebrate 5 years in May 2014! To commemorate the occasion and the amazing folks who have crossed our paths, we're featuring several blog testimonials throughout the month on "Why Minnesota Rising Matters."

Eric Sannerud is co-founder of Sandbox Cooperative and Mighty Axe Hops. He believes in a better food system for Minnesota and is acting to make it happen. He is a Udall Scholar, Pave Prospect, and Minneapolis Global Shaper. You can find him on Twitter at @EricSannerud or @SandboxCoop!

While I can no longer remember exactly why I registered for Minnesota Rising's #UnConference2013, the people I met and the impact it had on my life will never be forgotten.

Where do I start?

The gorgeous space? The good food (coming from a foodie: lunch was great)? Neither. The thing that made Minnesota Rising's Un/Conference unforgettable was the people. The Un/Conference could have been hosted in a haunted house with pizza hut (sorry) for lunch and the people would have still made it great.

As a presenter I had the privilege to engage in conversation with a room full of eager, smart, caring young folks. Besides the enormous support and intriguing new perspectives from the audience I found new friends: Nick, Andrew, Jenna and Jeny.

Nick and Andrew and I are now working together to expand the idea presented about, 'Community Consulting', and Jeny is co-founder with me on a crazy new young farmer and leader incubator called Sandbox Cooperative.

These four new friends are the enduring relationships built from Minnesota Rising's work in our State. Un/Conferences are 9 hours, friendship is forever.

-----------------------------------------
Identity-driven leadership can provide women of diversity a strong sense of self and purpose. It is critical to consider how your story has come to be: Have you let others define you and who you are? Or do you maintain the power to determine your identity and to tell your own story? In a world where our identities are comprised of multiple interrelated layers and we often are the sole representatives seen from our communities, how can we overcome pre-conceived notions of us and our experiences?

Join us for a stimulating conversation with Nekima Levy-Pounds from the University of St. Thomas Law School and Rinal Ray from the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits. We will discuss how creating and acting from our own sense of core identity can empower us to lead in authentic and sustaining ways to achieve our personal and community goals.
Light refreshments will be provided.
