[Minnesota Rising Dispatch] May 2016

[#mnrising Dispatch] May 2016

This month marks the seventh anniversary of our founding! It's amazing to look back at all of the connections created, relationships built, and conversations hosted by the Minnesota Rising network during this time. This past month, we had the pleasure of hosting an Identity-Driven Leadership session as part of bushCONNECT 2016 Day 2 to explore issues of race, identity, and power. Join us as we continue the conversation in June - with a PiVOT and LOCUS discussion on race in the workplace, an event to explore politics and civic engagement in 2016 with Minnesota Public Radio's GenListen, and at our June Sounding Board Session at Sandcastle. Thanks for being a part of this journey and we look forward to seeing what else emerges over the next seven years!

Keeping It 100: Politics in Your Community... Who Cares?

MPR GenListen + #mnrising
In this election year, political involvement and civic engagement are at the forefront of the news and community conversations. Are you disheartened by the political climate or your options for the 2016 presidential election? Struggling to see how you can create positive change in your neighborhood or community? These topics are national, local, and deeply personal, requiring attention from each of us individually and all of us collectively. And amidst all the bad news of late is some good news - you can make a difference by getting involved in your community! Join Minnesota Public Radio's GenListen and Minnesota Rising for light appetizers and an evening of inspiring storytelling from emerging leaders with diverse paths, connecting with resources to get involved locally, and discussion about what we each can do to make a difference in today's political climate. A Discussion on Race in the Workplace

PiVOT is partnering with LOCUS to hold a series of focus groups to discuss the initiative and share stories. These focus groups will be an open space where people of color in the Twin Cities can share personal stories of their work experiences. This space is meant to be a healing space for attendees and stories shared may be used to inspire a script for the videos. All comments and stories will be anonymous. Dinner and child care provided!

Do you hate the phrase “Diversity in the Workplace?” We do, so we’re not using that term. Do you often feel like you’re the only person of color in your office or department? We know how that feels. If so, join us for a conversation about your experiences! PiVOT is an initiative to produce fun and educational videos with an accompanying discussion guide about what it’s like to be a person of color in the workplace in the Twin Cities. The goal of the videos and study guide are to help spark a conversation in various work environments to address diversity and inclusion. [Read more.]
