[Minnesota Rising Dispatch] September 2021

[#mnrising Dispatch] September 2021

This month’s Solstice and the Mid-Autumn or Moon Festival call our attention to earth’s seasonal transitions, reminding us that even as we acknowledge that the bright long days of summer have passed and anticipate the cold dark period leading us toward year's end in the northern hemisphere, our job as always is to be here now. In the midst of Hispanic Heritage Month, see the YWCA Minneapolis' list of Hispanic and Latino/a/x/e Businesses and Organizations to Support and the Minnesota Council on Latino Affairs' (MCLA) efforts to highlight Latino Minnesotan leaders, stories, and issues. ¡Feliz Mes de la Herencia Latina 2021!

[Minnesota Rising Dispatch] August 2021

[#mnrising Dispatch] August 2021

The rhythms and signals of this time of year are familiar and different all at once. Students are heading back to school with First Day photos or move-in days, yet with masking and social distancing requirements in place to support community health. The State Fair is dubbed the Great Minnesota Get-Back Together replete with longtime traditions, yet has experienced a noted decline in vendors and fairgoers this year. Our nation and globe are experiencing compounded grief from crises in Afghanistan, wildfires - including in our state, Hurricane Ida, the Delta variant, and more. We need community care more than ever, including knowing that the narrative is not only negative. To that end, consider nominating someone for the #MNCivicLeader campaign to uplift and celebrate everyday community members who go above and beyond to make a difference in Minnesota; donating to support refugee resettlement, disaster relief, climate justice, health equity, or any number of causes you’re presently drawn to address; or participating in upcoming events and opportunities below listed below to build connection and take local action. Above all, know that doing what is *yours* to do is enough. Today and every day.

YNPN Twin Cities Leadership Institute

The world needs better leaders. But, what makes a better leader? The 2021-22 YNPN Leadership Institute is designed to answer this question with a simple premise: unlearning leadership. This four-part institute will challenge participants to uproot old habits of leadership that are grounded in white supremacy culture - hierarchy, individualism, scarcity, and destructive competition - and plant, nurture and grow a new leadership framework. September 1 is the deadline for online and verbal interest forms to be completed. [Minnesota Rising Dispatch] July 2021

[#mnrising Dispatch] July 2021

The world has come together for the #2020ne Olympic Games and the celebration is strongest in our home state this week. Governor Walz and Mayor Carter of the City of Saint Paul declared July 30 "Sunisa Lee Day" after the Minnesota gymnast won a gold medal for the women's individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympics. Suni is the fifth consecutive American woman to win gold in the event and the first Hmong American to make Team USA.

Her personal story of persistence and overcoming speaks volumes about the spirit and resilience of the Hmong community, the role that family and community play in supporting young people's success, and the importance of believing in what's possible. Wishing continued luck to the many Minnesotans representing the best of our communities at these Olympic Games!

Pandemic Storytelling Workshop

[Minnesota Rising Dispatch] June 2021

[#mnrising Dispatch] June 2021

This month we celebrate with pride that the Stonewall Uprising helped pave a way for greater inclusion and efforts to outlove hate. And as Juneteenth increasingly becomes recognized as a federal and local holiday, we are reminded of the words of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” The Summer Solstice marked a diminishing daily length of daylight but the fact that it remains lighter out for later during this time of year bolsters the assurance of the many different ways to be in the light. With an attentiveness to history, may we all do the best we know how to shape the here and now, on our paths toward justice and love.

[Minnesota Rising Dispatch] May 2021

[#mnrising Dispatch] May 2021

This month marks 12 years of the Minnesota Rising blog and the idea that collectively sharing this time and space is a basis for mattering to one another. One year out from the uprisings following the police murder of George Floyd, we also recognize the ways in which our community has been catapulted into global focus. May we use this pressure for positive growth, to break patterns and condition ourselves and institutions to respond in different ways. Ways that for May's month-long observances, ranging from those of Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Heritage, American Indians in Mnisota, and Mental Health Awareness, among others, ensure that our communities are seen, supported, and fully represented as a part of the story of and future of Minnesota. Read on for several such opportunities to develop capacity and garner resources for advancing equity and community change.

Initiators Fellowship

"Change Greater Minnesota With Us." The Initiators Fellowship is a big, bold strategy that provides the next generation of regional leaders the opportunity to use their entrepreneurial spirit to address society’s needs while building the business and leadership capacity of Greater Minnesota. The application process for the two-year fellowship opens on May 24 and closes on June 15. Up to eight fellows will be selected for the social entrepreneurship program that provides a $60,000 stipend ($30,000/year), a hand-selected, executive-level mentor and wrap-around training and support to help up-and-coming leaders advance their social enterprise ideas. [Learn more.]

Lead For Minnesota 2021 Fellowship

Lead For Minnesota's Fellowship selects, trains, and places our nation’s most promising young leaders in two-year paid fellowships in local community organizations – such as local government, nonprofits, and community-based organizations – as a means of strengthening America’s public institutions, revitalizing our local communities, and cultivating a new generation of transformational community leaders. Lead For Minnesota is an AmeriCorps program, and as such, applicants are eligible to become AmeriCorps members if qualified. Candidates can apply to serve any community where they have strong personal ties. If selected as a Finalist, Lead For Minnesota will support applicant-led candidates in identifying a suitable host placement in their community of choice. [Learn more.]

Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute

Applications for the next cohort of the Nexus Community Partners (Nexus) Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute (BCLI) are open. BCLI works to build more engaged and powerful communities in the region by equipping BIPOC and other community members who have been shut out of governing to serve on city, county, metro and state boards and commissions that influence and impact equity in the region in economic development, health, housing, transit and workforce development. Nominations are due Friday, June 11. [Learn more.]

Community Equity Program

The Community Equity Program (CEP) is an immersive program housed out of Wilder Foundation that brings together up to 20 Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) who want to get involved in state-level policy and fight for change in their communities. CEP will provide participants the knowledge and tools to advocate and advance legislation, engage with policymakers, and build community power and solidarity at the Capitol. CEP is open to applicants who are both early and seasoned in their leadership journeys. CEP is more interested in learning about your passions and commitment to building your skills to shift policies and make change in the communities you care about than degrees and accolades. Everyone has something to learn and share from/with one another. [Read more.]
