As we prepare for American Indian Month in Minnesota and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month nationally, and mark three years since the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, may we recognize the ways our histories intersect and act to categorically impact how our destinies are bound up together. See this month's Dispatch for opportunities to connect, celebrate, and catalyze our communities throughout the month of May.  2024-2025 Initiators Fellowship The Initiators Fellowship is designed for idea and early-stage entrepreneurs in Greater Minnesota eager to tackle a social or environmental challenge while pursuing leadership growth. All ventures must have a home in the Initiators Fellowship’s 53-county and six native nations region. This program offers Fellows wrap-around support and guidance in their enterprise and leadership journey via individual support and a collective cohort format. The 2024-2025 Initiators Fellowship application will open on May 1 and close at noon on June 15. [Read more.] AAPI Generations Conference Theater Mu will host the AAPI Generations Conference May 19-21 at Park Square Theatre in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month along with Theatre Mu’s 30th anniversary. The event will include guests of honor David Henry Hwang, Amy Hill, and Mu co-founding artistic director Rick Shiomi. The opening plenary will feature University of Minnesota professor and Asian American theatre historian Dr. Josephine Lee discussing with Hwang, Hill, and Shiomi their experiences and the changes they’ve seen in Asian American theatre. Highlights of the weekend include a performance by TaikoArts Midwest and the New Eyes play-reading festival, Mu’s longest running tradition. [Learn more.] 2023-2024 Policy Fellows The Policy Fellows program is one of the country’s most respected public affairs leadership experiences for emerging and mid-career professionals. Each year, approximately 35 leaders from government, business/industry, and nonprofit organizations from around the state are selected through a competitive application process. During the nine-month program Fellows from the Twin Cities area and across greater Minnesota come together as a cohort once a month and travel together to Washington, DC, for a multi-day study trip. The application for the 2023-2024 cohort is now open until Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 11:59 pm CDT. [#mnrising Dispatch] February 2023 The shortest month of the year and yet so full, with Minnesota snowstorms and snow emergencies, Valentine's and Galentine's, and respective resets and restarts. And throughout, a chance to honor Black History in Minnesota through supporting Melanin in Motion, listening to and amplifying Black voices and perspectives, and advocating to ensure equity for all until Justice Just Is. May we continue to act on Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s wisdom to build beloved community here and now: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." Bloom in Bloomington Bloom in Bloomington is a youth workforce program offering young people aged 16 to 24 summer internship experiences. Applicants must live in Bloomington or attend high school or college in the city. There is an eight-week internship for current high school students who are at least 16 years old, including a weekly mandated leadership institute. Anticipated pay for this program starts at $15 per hour. There is a 12-week internship program for those who are at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent. Anticipated pay for this program starts at $20 per hour. There are openings across the Twin Cities in the areas of climate mitigation, K-8 education, and affordable housing access. [Register online.] Minnesota RUX The Minnesota Rural-Urban Exchange cohort is a creative leadership program designed to develop skills and confidence, grow social capital, and cultivate relationships across racial, economic and geographic divides. RUX brings us to one another’s places to better understand who we are, what we love, what we fear, and what we need from one another. Each gathering is curated as a long-weekend retreat and will be hosted in various rural and urban communities across the state. We are currently looking for twelve people to join our Minnesota RUX cohort. The cohort meets four times over a two-year period. The rabbit more than any other of the Chinese zodiac animals symbolizes luck, and has been described as waiting for an opportune moment and then leaping into action. Recognizing the disconnection, trauma, and grief our communities are experiencing with police-involved and community shootings locally and nationwide, may we see this as opportune moment to take action. In this month's Dispatch, find opportunities to connect with local community, uplift Black and Native voices and language, and grieve and laugh with Asian artists. Where possible, with support, find a way to turn your anguish to action. 2023 Move for America Fellowship Program The Move for America Fellowship Program is a paid, immersive learning experience for emerging leaders to move across America's cultural, political, and geographic fault lines to live, learn, and serve. Fellows will serve in community-based organizations, build relationships, and learn about their host town. They will participate in professional development sessions, peer mentorship, and complete a capstone project designed to build the skills and habits to bridge divides through youth engagement. [Apply online.] Audition Prep 101 Join Theater Mu artistic director Lily Tung Crystal and local artists Katie Bradley and Wesley Mouri as they offer insider knowledge, tips, and tricks about auditioning. This a la carte workshop series begins with a seminar discussing topics such as finding audition materials, seeking out audition opportunities, and how to present yourself in front of a panel of auditors. Next, sign up for one-on-one coaching sessions to hone your audition monologues and song selections. Finally, the series concludes with the opportunity to show off what you’ve learned by participating in a mock audition, after which you will receive feedback to help you in the future. Come together on February 18 and 19 with your community to advocate, activate and learn how to change laws and policies. Join the Center for Victims of Torture and partners at two sessions at Rondo Community Library to discuss strategies focused on the Minnesota legislature, building community power, and taking care of ourselves/each other during the process. [Register online.] Serving in Local Elected Office: A Citizens League Report Throughout the summer and fall of 2022, the Citizens League sought out the voices and perspectives of those who have been asked to serve, those currently serving, and those running for local office (city council and mayor) in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis- Saint Paul) 7-County Metro area. This report is also offered as encouragement for those who would consider running for office at the local level, especially those who may initially say what could I bring to that role? [#mnrising Dispatch] November 2022 This month is marked by seasonal shifts, giving thanks, and recognition of the original and ongoing stewards of this land during Native Heritage Month. Mni Sóta Maḳoce, Minnesota, is home to the Dakota and Ojibwe Peoples and 11 sovereign American Indian nations. This year has been announced as the final ride of the Dakota 38+2 Memorial Ride, marking the end of the annual journey from Lower Brule, SD to Reconciliation Park in Mankato, MN. Consider joining the Dakota Wokiksuye Memorial Ride or Memorial Relay Run, or contributing via GoFundMe to support the horse ride which honors ancestors and spurs reconciliation between the Dakota and Mankato community. #WeAreOnNativeLand 2023 RISE Fellowship Program The RISE Fellowship brings together the next generation of highly-motivated, mission-driven, early career social sector and community leaders (with approximately five or fewer years of professional experience), who are passionate about social change and advancing equity. During the program, RISE Fellows gain an understanding of how mission-driven, social impact organizations function, develop essential leadership and professional skills, and engage in mentoring relationships and networking. [Learn more.] Intersect Community Engaging Art Call The Intersect announces a Requests for Proposals seeking 1-2 artists (or art teams) to provide community engaging art at 2 locations on and near the new Northloop bike path connection in Minneapolis on the mixed use apartment building. The RFP is seeking artists to design and install art that creates a sense of arrival to the location and area, and for the building to be a canvas for public art. The art installations are to commence and to be completed Spring 2023. [Read more.] 2023 Young Leaders Regional Vision & Policy Collaboration The Metropolitan Council is looking to partner with six organizations to invite young people to help shape the 2050 Regional Development Guide (RDG). In 2023, each organization will connect eight to ten leaders, ages 14-22, to collaborate on vision and values for the RDG. Young people will have the opportunity to advise staff and policymakers on long-range housing, regional parks, transportation, and wastewater treatment planning policies.
