[#mnrising Dispatch] April 2021 All eyes were on Minnesota earlier this month as a guilty, guilty, guilty verdict was read. And with this small measure of accountability we were able to let go of our collectively held breath. This is an important initial step in the work to advance equity and justice in our communities, to ensure that the lives of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color are seen, supported, and matter, but it is clear that we have far to go. It has been a heavy time locally as we experience some modicum of relief for George Floyd and his family and as we process the harm done to our communities (in this case as well as by the police killings of Daunte Wright, Philando Castile, Jamar Clark, and more). Please take good care of yourselves through grounding tools, rest, movement, and connection to nature and others. Facing Race Awards Nominations The Facing Race Awards recognize anti-racism activists and organizations in Minnesota who challenge absent and harmful narratives on race, build solutions that unite, instead of divide, and push for justice and equity. Do you know someone who deserves recognition for their commitment to racial equity and anti-racism efforts in Minnesota? Nominate that person for the 15th annual Facing Race Awards. Award recipients are nominated by the community, and up to four will be recognized.Each award recipient will receive a grant to benefit a Minnesota nonprofit of their choice and be recognized at a televised Facing Race Awards ceremony later this year. The nomination period has been extended to Monday, May 3 at 3pm. [Nominate someone today!] LOTT Fellows and Mentors Recruitment Applications for 2021 Fellows & Mentors are live! The 2021 LOTT Program will run September 2021 to March 2022 and will include one-on-one mentoring, leadership workshops, networking opportunities, and a community-based project. The program is actively recruiting women for the Fellowship who are looking to develop their leadership, expand their network, and realize their professional goals. They are also looking for women to mentor the Fellows: a critical piece of the program's success. [Learn more.] Policy Fellows Program Applications The Policy Fellows program provides emerging and mid-career professionals a renowned public affairs leadership development experience. Each year, approximately 35 leaders from government, business/industry, and nonprofit organizations from around the state are selected through a competitive application process. Applicants should live and work primarily in Minnesota, be a leader or emerging leader in their field of work and have a strong record of contributing to their community or working toward the common good. The program welcomes applicants of all backgrounds and political perspectives and seeks Fellows who want to engage respectfully and productively across these differences. [Apply by June 1.]  Rural Regenerator Fellowship Applications The Rural Regenerator Fellowship will facilitate long term learning and exchange across rural geographies and provide financial support to these leaders so they can think big as they grow, shift or expand their leadership efforts. 10 Fellows will be selected from communities of 50,000 people or fewer across the Upper Midwest. Fellows will receive $10,000 in flexible funds to support their existing work and/or to launch a new project in their community. Applications for the Rural Regenerator Fellowship are due by June 11, 2021, with information sessions on April 30 and May 21. [#mnrising Dispatch] March 2021 With having marked the Spring Equinox and all Minnesotans 16+ now being eligible for COVID vaccines we are being gifted more light and lightness. Even still, the Ides of March have brought their share of circumstances to challenge our hearts and sense of collective belonging. The Chauvin murder trial is underway in Minneapolis, our Asian American communities have experienced particularly increasing discrimination and violence over the past year including the abhorrent shootings targeting 3 Asian-owned businesses in Atlanta, and gun violence continues to generate fear for engaging in everyday activities in the midst of dual pandemics. The growing disconnection and hate in our communities urgently needs to be addressed. Here are a few ways how: Contact your Minnesota Representative or Senator in support of the Combating Hate bill (HF 1691/SF 2003) Take action with the Asian Minnesotan Alliance for Justice Practice self-awareness in responding to racism, as outlined by Team Dynamics Nominate Black leaders to participate in the African American Leadership Forum (AALF) the 2021 Josie R. Johnson Leadership Academy program.  Advocate for passage of the Equality Act in Congress All the while, be kind to yourself and others in endeavoring to effect justice and equity. May we increasingly be able to see each other and uplift one another in effort to build beloved community.  Saint Paul Community-First Public Safety Commission The Citizens League has been selected by the City of Saint Paul to lead a Community-First Public Safety Commission. The Commission will help shape Saint Paul’s continued work to take a holistic and sustainable approach to building safer outcomes in its neighborhoods. Consisting of 48 members appointed by the Mayor, the Commission will bring together community members with wide ranging experiences to explore how the City can build upon its current strategy. The  Commission wants to engage community members who live and work in Saint Paul - join upcoming online town halls on April 14 and 17 to share your input. [Register online.] Why Should I Take The COVID-19 Vaccine? Black, Indigenous and other people of color (BIPOC) communities have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. And these communities don’t necessarily see their concerns, interests and needs reflected in the vaccine distribution plan and communications efforts. [#mnrising Dispatch] February 2021 This past month we have celebrated Black History in the United States, even as we recognize that 28 days is not enough to begin to recognize the contributions of Black people to the culture, infrastructure, and progress of our nation. That Black history is American history, and that it is not just history, but our present and future. And in 2021, that the only way forward is through, together. This past month also marked the Lunar New Year with the arrival of the Year of the Metal Ox. The Chinese Zodiac indicates 2021 will be a year where work will be rewarded, for bringing order to family life, and when problems will be solved with a lot of discipline. [#mnrising Dispatch] January 2021 Happy 2021! The trend of this past year being full of the most uniquely historic of events continues into the start of this calendar year. Some recent events have allowed us to see the worst of our collective humanity, others have inspired us to know that there is always light if only we're brave enough to see it and be it. As the days start to grow longer, we can find hope in the healing transitions that have taken place and put faith in those yet to come as we move through this continuously unprecedented time in our lives and world.  In the words of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right." (Letter from Birmingham City Jail). May it be so as we begin anew in 2021. Who Leads in Minnesota? For Minnesota to be its best, we need talented leaders from the many diverse communities that make up our state to ensure our institutions work well for all. But who leads in Minnesota? It's difficult to determine because cross-sector data on who holds key leadership positions in institutions have not been readily available or easily accessible. Minnesota Compass (a project of Wilder Research) with the support of the Bush Foundation just launched "Who Leads in MN?" to share a holistic picture of leadership in institutions across the state. The data, inspiring examples of progress, and actionable ideas will be available free-of-charge on the Minnesota Compass website, as will materials to help organizations and individuals share and use the information. [Learn more.] Call for Volunteers: Nonviolent Peaceforce Learn how to protect yourself and your community. You’re invited to join Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) Peace Teams in the Twin Cities. The Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) is a global civilian protection agency (NGO) based in humanitarian and international human rights law. As a part of their growing work in Minnesota, they are organizing continued direct protection and violence prevention response for both the upcoming and ongoing racial justice protests and community-based protection initiatives. [#mnrising Dispatch] December 2020 This month’s Winter Solstice marked the shortest and darkest day of 2020, an unprecedented year that will be remembered for global pandemic, collective loss, and civil uprising. Our interdependence is clearer now than ever, along with our ability to withstand change, and in some cases, to allow these shifts to provoke deep transformation. There is now a proverbial light at the end of the tunnel as multiple vaccine options become available, institutions begin to fulfill their commitments to anti-racist resources and action, and global shifts in leadership are anticipated in 2021. Please continue to take good care of yourselves, and others as you are able, with the hope that in the new year you will come to know that you are stronger than you thought you were. Call for Submissions to Anthology Project  Ode to George: Reflections on George Floyd’s Memorial Site at 38th and Chicago | In an effort to celebrate, honor, and preserve this space that has sprouted and flourished under the care of community, this call for submissions seeks PERSONAL ESSAYS, POEMS, AND VISUAL ART that reflects on the significance of this space as articulated by Shanene Herbert in “A Guide for White Allies in Black Spaces of Mourning.”  All Are Welcome to Submit: This call is for emerging (including young people) and established artists from the local, national, and international community.
