Emerging Leaders is partnering with the Corcoran Neighborhood Organization to highlight innovations in energy efficient building and discuss the Citizen League's current work on electrical energy.

From the Midtown Farmers Market, the group will carpool and visit three projects, each with a particular focus on their community and sustainability: Hawthorne EcoVillage, The Rose – Hope Community, and MinnePHit Passivhaus. We'll end with lunch (on us!) and discussion.

Accepting Applicants: The Push Back Spoken Word & Rap Competition

TruArtSpeaks invites you to push back! A spoken word and rap competition, TruArtSpeaks is recruiting Minnesota youth interested  in sharing their voice in a national dialogue around the high school dropout rate. Poets and emcees between the ages of 15-22 are invited to enter and could win a $5,000 education scholarship as well as local prizes.

The Push Back 

The dropout crisis in America is a grave and growing concern. One million high school students drop out annually. We want to know why, so we are seeking your voice. Join the conversation and change the narrative. We want to know the real reasons, what is happening behind school doors and how can we all move towards a different future? 

TruArtSpeaks is inviting you to push back! Create, develop & share your three minute poem or rap addressing the national high school drop out crisis and submit it to the TruArtSpeaks website to enter into the competition. There will be a public event showcasing the top three poems/songs addressing this increasingly significant issue in our community. The competition is open to artists between the ages of 15-22 with a MN address. The top three videos, as well as the two runner ups, will be displayed at a public event honoring the participants and dispersing rewards for the top three videos. All videos will be entered into a national educational scholarship competition for $5,000! For more information on the national competition, the RAISE Up Project, click here. 

The deadline to submit your three minute poem/song as part of The Push Back competition is June 30th. 

Poems/songs can be developed and filmed independently and submitted here. * Or poets/emcees can attend one of four community workshop series, facilitated by some of the Twin Cities' freshest artists, in an effort to assist with not only your writing process, but with the filming process. All workshop participants will have their poem filmed by Line Break Media during the final session. 

This workshop series is structured in a three tier fashion. Participants will learn and explore the dropout crisis in America in a structured environment, alongside a professional artist from the Twin Cities community. The first set of workshops will be facilitated by Chantz Erolin at Diamonds Coffee Shoppe NE., Minneapolis, MN, 55413 from 5-7p on two consecutive Thursdays:

• June 17th, 2014 - Introduction to Content & Writing Workshop
• June 24th, 2014 - Performance Rehearsal & Filming

This Saturday, June 14 the brand new Green Line will launch connecting Minneapolis and St. Paul via Light Rail. The Metropolitan Council has partnered with the Central Corridor Funders Collaborative, and communities and businesses surrounding the line to host a series of events on launch day. Following 9 a.m. speeches and ceremonial ribbon cutting at Union Depot, festivities and events for all ages are planned from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Union Depot Station, Central Station, Western Ave Station, Victoria Street Station, Hamline Ave Station, Raymond Ave Station, Stadium Village Station, and West Bank Stations.

You have the chance to help make the launch a great success by volunteering! We are looking for volunteers for the Western, Victoria, Hamline, Raymond, Stadium Village, and West Bank Stations. Shifts are available all day, in the morning, and in the afternoon. Volunteers will help to great station visitors and staff activity areas. This is a great opportunity to get involved in the community and celebrate the launch of the new Green Line.
