Accepting Applications: Mobilizer Academy

Mobilize.org is piloting a new national leadership development program targeted at Millennial leaders. In 2013, the Mobilizer Academy will provide twenty selected leaders a twelve-month virtual and in-person program designed to equip participants with leadership training and begin developing a pipeline of Millennial leaders in the social sector. Curriculum includes creation and implementation of social ventures focused on addressing an unmet community need. Applications are due by December 19th, and additional details follow below!

Mobilizer Academy

In 2013, Mobilize.org will pilot a national leadership development program, the Mobilizer Academy, to address the needs of our growing network of change-makers and build a pipeline of Millennial leaders in the social sector. The Mobilizer Academy is an in depth, twelve-month virtual and in-person program to equip Millennials with the skills and resources necessary to realize their leadership potential and create and implement successful social ventures, focused on addressing an unmet community need.

Through a customized, Millennial-led process, Mobilize.org will build and execute the Mobilizer Academy, which will result in increased knowledge, impact and skills as well as strengthen the relationships and networks of Millennial leaders. The Mobilizer Academy will result in a critical mass of Millennials who are active in their communities, knowledgeable of their role and responsibilities as leaders and inspiring other Millennials to consider careers in the social sector.

Who is eligible to apply?

Millennials (individuals born between 1976-1996) living in the United States. You do not need to attend a college or university to apply but participants will need access to a computer and Internet. 

What does it cost?

If selected, Mobilize.org will cover all costs to participate.

Where will we meet?

The Mobilizer Academy will consist of virtual and in-person convenings. Mobilize.org will cover the cost of airfare, hotel and travel expenses for the two in-person convenings. 

When will the program begin?

Accepted applicants will receive their first course communication the week of January 7th, 2013.  

What is the time commitment?

The Mobilizer Academy will require approximately 3 hours per week, or similar to a single credit college course.

When is the deadline for application?

 Applications should be submitted by December 19^th. Applicants will be notified of their application status in early January.

I’ve never held a leadership position. Can I still apply? 

YES! The Mobilizer Academy is looking for a diverse class of participants with varying levels of leadership and experience. This includes people who may not have had the opportunity to serve in a leadership role, but have an interest in becoming a strong voice and making an impact on their community.

What do you mean by “civic or social venture”?

That’s a fancy term for a community project that addresses a specific local need or social issue. The project should be Millennial-led and all partisan.

You're Invited: How Can Research on Civic Identities of Students and Alumni Spark Innovations in Civic Engagement?

Did you get your start in community engagement as a result of your higher education experience? Perhaps you learned about critical social issues in a certain professor's class or volunteered with a particular student club to make a difference in your local college community? In an effort to discover innovative strategies for developing civic knowledge, skills, and collective action among students and alumni, the Jandris Center for Innovative Higher Education presents "How Can Research on Civic Identities of Students and Alumni Spark Innovations in Civic Engagement?" Join the conversation to garner key insights on civic identities of students and alumni  from an interactive panel of professionals in higher education, and consider adding your story to their emerging research!

Description: 

This interactive event will engage panelists and participants, both in person and online, in a discussion of emerging research exploring civic identities of students and alumni. This discussion will challenge participants to consider innovative strategies for developing civic knowledge, skills, and collective action among students and alumni. Some of the key questions that will be addressed include: 

• What frameworks and perspectives might help inform civic engagement scholarship and practice?
• Which students and alumni are more likely to volunteer, advocate, “do it all,” or perhaps “do nothing” as it relates to civic engagement during and after college?
• What are the implications for designing programs that help students and alumni reach their potential as engaged and informed citizens?

What are my parking options getting to the event?

There is ample amount of metered street parking on 11th Street. You may also park in the Harmon Ramp just off of 11th Street (ramp is on the left side of the street). 

Which building is the event taking place?

The event is located in Schulze Hall Room 335. Enter Schulze Hall on 11th Street between LaSalle and Harmon. Take the elevator to the 3rd Floor.
