April 18 Mind Opener: How are police trained and could it be better?
Minnesota was among the first states to set statewide selection and training standards for all peace officers. Most of those standards for basic peace officer training and selection are set out in Minnesota law. There is an effort at the legislature this year to mandate training in de-escalation techniques for every Minnesota officer. For example, as the Star Tribune reports, a bill before the Legislature includes mandatory training in crisis intervention, conflict management and cultural issues for the state’s 10,500 officers.
Is this enough? What other ideas should be tried to be sure we have the best peace officers possible?
