[Minnesota Rising Dispatch] January 2020

[#mnrising Dispatch] January 2020

Happy new calendar year, new decade, and new Lunar New Year! In late January, we welcomed the Year of the Metal Rat, which shows promise to be a strong, prosperous, and auspicious year for almost all Chinese zodiac signs. Xīn Nián Kuài Lè! Chúc Mừng Năm Mới!

A fresh start and opportunities for action abound at the individual, organizational, and systems levels in the coming weeks. Individuals seeking youth employment and career training options can apply to MIGIZI's Indigenous Pathways program, the City of Minneapolis' STEP-Up internship program, and the City of Saint Paul's Right Track internship program. Nonprofit innovators can consider the Greater Twin Cities United Way's Community Impact Accelerator, which is seeking proposals for community innovation for a chance to win up to $75,000. And the Center for Economic Inclusion seeks your partnership to make meaningful, measurable progress in local efforts to close racial wealth gaps in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul region, starting with attending the upcoming Equity Data Forum on February 13.

As we wrap up the cloudiest January in Minnesota on the record books for several decades, here's hoping we see sunshine and big steps into what's rising next for you in the weeks ahead!

Leaders of Today and Tomorrow

Since 2009, LOTT has provided a fellowship program to inspire womxn leaders to instill community, connection and authenticity at no cost to them. We know that investing in womxn who may not have professional development opportunities supports their career and leadership trajectory, making our community a better place. We are excited to launch the next cohort of fellows in March! This year's program will run from March - June and will offer a revamped curriculum including: new age professionalism, identity driven leadership, teamwork and working across difference, ethics, health and self-care, networking, and goal setting for personal and professional development. [Apply online to be a 2020 Fellow or Mentor.]

2020-2021 Minneapolis Handbook of the Streets

Hot off the presses, a fresh edition of the Minneapolis Handbook of the Streets has landed! Just like the first edition of the Handbook of the Streets that St. Stephen's Human Services published in 1989, the 2020-2021 Minneapolis edition has a yellow cover. Copies of the 2020-2021 edition of the Minneapolis Handbook of the Streets or the 2019-2020 edition of the St. Paul Handbook of the Streets may be ordered online. People in need may stop by the St. Stephen's Welcome Center during open hours (8:30am – 4:00pm, Monday-Friday) to obtain a copy. [Learn more.]

YWCA Minneapolis Racial Justice Facilitator Program

The YWCA Minneapolis provides free racial justice facilitator training. Through the indigenous tradition of circle dialogue, facilitators gain experience and confidence navigating through difficult conversations about race and the effects of racism. After completing the three-part training program, you will be prepared to facilitate YWCA workshops, community conversations and the yearly It’s Time to Talk: Forums on Race™ event. The time commitment consists of 7.5 hours spread over three 2.5-hour sessions with a single cohort, or group of facilitators. The training is FREE. New trained Racial Justice Facilitators are expected to commit to facilitating on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at the annual It's Time to Talk™ event. [Learn more.]
