[Minnesota Rising Dispatch] December 2017

[#mnrising Dispatch] December 2017

In this season of dark and cold in the Bold North, we can be grateful that this time of hibernation and dormancy are providing the necessary ingredients for the seeds of creativity, connection, and hope within us to sprout in 2018. May you find what you need among the opportunities within this month's Dispatch, friends and family around you, and the larger community committed to taking action to improve health and vitality for all in the year ahead. "And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been." -Rainer Maria Rilke

The Caregiving Sandwich: Caring for older adults and children in Minnesota

Join the Citizens League and 89.3 The Current on December 5th, 2017 at Midpointe Event Center. According to the Population Reference Bureau, the number of people 65 and older is projected to more than double from 46 million today to over 98 million by 2060. In Minnesota, the height of the age boom will take place at the same time that the growth in the labor force—a key ingredient for economic growth—drops to almost zero. This unprecedented demographic shift will have an impact on all levels of public policy, from Social Security and Medicare to employment productivity and scholastic achievement. [Read more.]

[Minnesota Rising Dispatch] August 2017

[#mnrising Dispatch] August 2017

From Hurricane Harvey to Charlottesville, this month's headlines hurt the heart. More than ever, as the stakes become increasingly higher and the challenges painstakingly extreme, we are reminded we must seek and speak the truth; call out racism, hate, and bigotry in all forms; and more importantly, go beyond merely discerning and disparaging to do the life-giving work of holding space, building relationships, and ultimately creating the kind of community that knows, values, and is in relationship with one another and the earth. And especially doing so in a way that honors the need for our self-care and collective care. May we bring light and heat to what the world calls forth from each of us now.

The 2017 Minnesota Election Summit, which serves as the University's 2017 Constitution Day event, brings together Facebook leaders with Secretary of State Steve Simon and others to spotlight the breakthroughs in 2016 and lessons for 2017 and beyond. Join us Thursday, September 14, Noon - 1:30 p.m. at the Cowles Auditorium at the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota. [Learn more.]

[Minnesota Rising Dispatch] July 2017

[#mnrising Dispatch] July 2017

Drawing inspiration to fully embrace these days and this season from Mary Oliver's "The Summer Day," we leave you this month merely with an excerpt of her poetry:

I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
