Steve Jobs broke the rules when it comes to design. Rosa Parks broke the rules when it comes to discrimination. A first line supervisor at a chem plant broke the rules when he violated established protocol to avoid contaminating a nearby watershed.

Talk about breaking the rules is difficult when the headlines are filled with recurring news of leaders failing on their commitments, betraying promises, and stretching the rules for their own profit and gain.

Steve Boehlke understands, however, that the creative spirit will not thrive and innovation will not flourish without the courage to break the rules. With three basic principles and lively stories, Steve will challenge us to examine with one another our understanding of integrity even as we strive to be leaders who want to make a difference.

• Identify the rules of a community/culture/organization
• Assess when you are personally willing to take risks and break rules to make change
• Network with peers in a similar position

More than 20 years ago he established SFB Associates, a global consulting practice in leadership development, focusing extensively on senior leaders in R&D. Corporate clients have included Cargill, ExxonMobil, HP, Merck, Nestle, among others. Author of the book, "50 Lessons on Leading for Those with Little Time for Reading," Steve is now devoting more time to equipping the next generation of leaders to serve. His message is simple: Leadership is born from having the courage to be who you are.
