Happy New Year! It's 2012, the Year of the Dragon, and Minnesota Rising is excited for all that the year ahead promises! We've got some great things planned, including scaling up our Cascading Conversations Tour, further integrating our digital presence and communications, and figuring out just how we can work to develop the collective capacity of the rising generation in Minnesota.

We imagine that there will be additional innovative collaborations, exciting relationships, and perhaps, interstate road trips, that may also emerge throughout this year. We hope you'll stay tuned and be a part of those efforts, and more, as we continue our efforts to build the network for what's next!

The "Our Minnesota" Cascading Conversations Tour is well underwayand we're excited to see feedback coming in from conversations with young Minnesotans statewide!

To continue building momentum, we're putting out a call for the first group of forerunners to commit to completing three cascading conversations by the end of April 2012. These informal brown bag lunches, coordinated by Jenny Johnson of Aeon, have grown to be a helpful forum for discussing nonprofit young professionals group best practices and for connecting across organizations and interest areas. If you've got some successes from 2011 to celebrate and some plans in the works for 2012, drop on in to see what might spring up in advice-sharing or new collaborations for the year ahead. MEET THE SPEAKER

Coach Beth Wallace helps people get unstuck.

Beth has spent thirty years working in nonprofit organizations in Vermont and Minnesota, and has been working for herself since 2005. In addition to coaching, she is a book editor who helps people get their big ideas into print. Beth is a graduate of the Vermont Community Fund's year-long Organizational Development Institute, the Coaches Training Institute, and Carleton College.

She is one of the founders and the editor-in-chief ofRainbow Rumpus, the award-winning online magazine for kids with LGBT parents. Beth lives in south Minneapolis, where she has two cats, too big a garden, and too much yarn.

2012 is a big year. It's the Citizens League's 60th Anniversary, the Centennial Celebration for my alma mater, the College of St. Scholastica, and of course, a presidential election year. In order to make sure you're prepped for the Republican and Democratic caucuses coming up in the next couple of weeks, The White House Project invites you to join them for Caucus and Convention Training. Women of all political stripes and experiences are welcome, and given the partisanship and gridlock of late, we need new and collaborative voices across the political spectrum to create a vision for where we can go together. Join in and help constructively influence the conversation in a big way this big year!

Happy New Year! This is the time of year that makes us think about setting goals and making plans. But as much as we plan, we can’t predict the future--we don’t ever know with any certainty what the world will be like tomorrow. All we can do is put our ear to the ground, listen to the distant signals, and see if we can make a good guess. Here’s my best guess: I think what’s next is about collaboration and new ways of converging ideas. New models for solutions, for partners and resources. Because in my own work, I see that our biggest successes have come when we’ve reached out to nontraditional partners, borrowed models and platforms from other sectors, and found support in unlikely places. That’s been true in partnerships in healthcare,entrepreneurship, local food and major infrastructure development. And those ways of converging ideas and bringing art and artists to new tables and involving them in the whole of their community have brought new attention and new resources.

The reassuring part about this way of working is that we have everything we need.You have everything you need. It’s just a matter of being curious enough to discover new ways of doing things, open enough to finding new resources. And, building a network – a big one. If you’ll go along with me and say that what’s next is about these new combinations of existing solutions, then we’re going to need a big network of people to find the overlaps, the gaps and the smart new combinations, right? How do we do that?

I think it’s as simple as this: love something. do something.

Love something. Do you know what you love? What you believe in so deeply that you can taste it? I’m talking about something different than a cause you care about or a topic you know a lot about. I mean deep, passionate love. The neuroscientist Jonah Lehrer has a great essay that uses the word “grit” to describe this – the thing that you just can’t let go of, that never gets comfortable or complacent. What do you wake up in the morning thinking about? If you don’t know what it is yet, that’s ok – try on some different hats, see what sticks. You’ll know it when you find it. But don’t settle for “good work”, or a mission statement, or a job you can feel good about. Good is not the same as love. Once you find it, share it. Wear your heart on the outside. People respond to passion. This is the whole beauty of TEDtalks, right? Watching people talk about what they love is motivating and inspiring, it makes you love what they love for a moment. I’m a shy person, but I can talk to you forever about the need for artists in our communities. People have really good radar for authenticity. And once you find the thing you love, that you can speak about from your heart and your gut, you’ll find that it’s easy to talk about and that it draws people to you who are interested in the same thing and who want to share their ideas, work together, make something happen with you.

Do something. Take that love and do something – you don’t need permission, or money, or an organization – just do. When you do something you believe in, when you put your idea or your solution into the world, even in a small way, people will notice – and you’ll find the people who want to help pretty fast. What’s something you can do today? Please don’t wait around for someone to invite you, or ask you or tell you – the world needs your ideas, your solutions, your love.

Love something. Do something.

Last year, I was pleased to join the Governing Council of the Minnesota Public Health Association and have since enjoyed getting to know and work with other members of the board of directors. Our 2011-2012 Policy Forum Series asks, "What Plagues Our Children?" The second installment in the series focuses on the obesity epidemic and considers perceptions of weight, the impact of programs tackling obesity and physical activity issues, and efforts to promote healthy eating habits in children. Join us in this critical conversation and work for the health of Minnesota's future generations!

What Plagues our Children?

Our 2011-2012 policy forum series explores topics related to the health of our children. Panelists and forum participants will focus this discussion on the problem of childhood obesity. Topics will include changing perceptions about weight, the impact of programs to address obesity and physical activity, and the changing views about promoting healthy eating habits in children. David Golden, MPHA President-elect, will moderate the forum.

I'm excited about this upcoming Young Nonprofit Professionals Network - Twin Cities event with The Theater of Public Policy for a number of reasons. First, it involves improv. Second, there are some prominent and knowledgeable nonprofit women leaders sharing their insights and predictions as to what 2012 holds. Most importantly, though, I'm excited because these two groups first connected at the Minnesota Rising 2011 Un/Conference! Collaboration borne out of collaboration. My predicted forecast? Pure sunshine!

YNPN is thrilled to partner with the Theater of Public Policy on January 27 to help forecast what 2012 has in store for the nonprofit sector. Come hear local luminaries talk about what they think the new year holds for the nonprofit world and stay to see their predictions played out (literally) by a group of improv professionals.

First, find out what nonprofit experts Marcia Avner, Senior Fellow for the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, and Shelia Smith, Executive Director of the Minnesota Center for the Arts, foresee for 2012. Then watch the improv artists from the Theater of Public Policy demonstrate these predictions before your very eyes. You'll also

be able to network with other YNPN members,
get a taste of improv theater (widely acclaimed to help professionals think more creatively and nimbly in a professional setting), and
equip yourself with what you need to know to be a more strategic nonprofit professional in 2012.

Amanda Bell– “Amanda works her magic and people come together. Her skills and passion are motivating and epic.”

Amanda is a community organizer with Living Our Visions, Wisconsin, a grassroots organization of individuals with disabilities, families and community members building fulfilling, community centered lives for all citizens. Amanda’s supporters say that when she was handed a list of 300 families in need of services for their adult children with disabilities, she picked up the phone and developed a taste for coffee, spending two years in coffee shops listening deeply to anyone who wouldn’t hang up on her. She empowers families to "use what they have to get what they don't have" and helps them build a web of relational support to meet their needs.

[Required Reading] CGE and Reciprocity: Recent Explorations

I was fortunate to study abroad and away for nearly half of my college career, with comprehensive academic programs that combined service-learning and community engagement in meaningful and memorable ways. I spent a semester in Namibia and South Africa with Augsburg College's Center for Global Education with their "Nation Building, Globalization, and Decolonizing the Mind," program, and was pleased to see that their Fall 2011 newsletter included some research about the reciprocity that can result from these types of exchange programs. Check out the brief below and see how we can, indeed, be better together!

CGE and Reciprocity: Recent Explorations

Reciprocity is a term used widely here at the Center for Global Education, and it is one that is gaining attention in the wider world of international education. We are pleased to see a growth in understanding about the actual exchange of benefit and harm that can occur when groups of North Americans travel to and live in another country or community.

Ann-Lutterman Aguilar’s Findings on Reciprocity in Mexico

Since reciprocity is a key element to our programming, it has been a significant asset to our organization. Ann Lutterman-Aguilar, site director in Mexico, has data from her doctoral research (see professional involvement section of Annual Report) that assists us in better understanding the exchanges we are making with communities in Mexico. While Ann’s research is primarily about vocation, a critical aspect of her research explores the question, “Do only U.S. students benefit from programs, or do Mexican community partners benefit as well? In other words, does reciprocity truly exist?” Ann’s research included data gathered from 105 Mexican community partners who answered questionnaires and participated in focus groups and in-depth interviews. The Mexican participants included members of host families, long- term guest speakers, and internship supervisors. The findings demonstrated that Mexican partners do indeed believe there is reciprocity existing in the intercultural encounters with U.S. students. Specifically, participants reported significant increases in their appreciation for and understanding of many forms of diversity, including greater appreciation for racial, religious, and sexual diversity. Another important impact of the intercultural encounters identified by Mexican participants was the overcoming of internalized classism and/or racism and discovering the value of their own voices.

The CGE-Mexico team has adopted David Fox’s classification of two primary types of reciprocity within international education:1) direct, or “specific reciprocity,” which involves “giving back directly to those who have served them,” and 2) indirect or “generalized reciprocity,” in which the host community “believes that someone or some group, be they from the host community or not, will benefit from what participants contribute to society someday.”1 This is what some refer to as the “pay-it-forward” form of reciprocity—it doesn’t directly benefit the community, but the community trusts that participants will take positive action in the future as a result of the experience. This sentiment is highlighted by the fact that research participants praised the programs’ emphasis on social analysis and contrasted it with programs that “seem to be more interested in moving foreigners to feel compassion and provide charity to the poor.” For example, Nahua spiritual leader Ignacio “Nacho” Torres Ramírez said: “The students get to know us in person and feel and experience closeness with an Indigenous community. They also directly experience our spirituality, our cosmovision, and our lives first hand…these encounters help fight racism and classism and create the solidarity rather than charity because people can’t walk away from these relationships just saying, “What cute Indigenous people, what a lovely culture, what pretty clothing.”

Reciprocity Panel at CGE All-Staff Meetings

Three participants from Ann’s research contributed to a panel presentation on reciprocity at CGE’s biannual staff meetings in July (see highlights section of Annual Report):

Victoria Maria de León Alvarado from the faith-based women's group Luz y Libertad, a group that has met with many of our students and participants over the course of several years.

Juliana García Quintanilla from the Independent Human Rights Commission of the State of Morelos (CIDHM). She has served as both a speaker and internship supervisor. CIDHM has been involved with CGE-Mexico since its founding.

Rosario Bello Escorcia, who grew up in a host family and is now a Spanish teacher at UNIVERSAL, the language school that hosts our students.

During the panel, Rosario shared that CGE experiences helped her learn a great deal about identity and stereotypes, particularly her stereotypes about people from the United States. She had always perceived U.S. citizens to be rich, but then students began to arrive and they spoke about their lives, many of which had been lived in poverty. Rosario also shared this story with Ann and the panel, which demonstrates Ann’s findings about internalized racism: “When I was sixteen years old, one of the students who lived with my family asked me what ethnic group or tribe I belonged to. I said, ‘No, I’m not Indigenous. I am Mestiza; my grandfather was Spanish.’ I was very angry and offended at first. But the student wouldn’t stop talking. She said, ‘But you look more Indigenous than mixed-race.’ So I began to look at myself, and eventually…I began to feel proud of who I am and not hide it. I began to accept my Indigenous heritage and learn more about the history of my people ... That conversation changed me because it started me on the path to acceptance of my own identity.”

Victoria spoke at length about how meeting with students taught her that her voice is valued. Over time, the gratitude and praise offered by the students built her confidence, and this is a significant benefit to her personhood and to her work. Juliana’s contribution to the panel was offering the advice that CGE should create more time during exchanges to further enhance the reciprocity. The panel was an excellent way for the entire organization to better understand what reciprocity is in the words of those with whom we share the exchange.

Other Sites: Reciprocity in El Sontule Community

In addition to Ann’s research, our other sites have explored more closely how reciprocity exists in their context. One example is the relationship between CGE in Nicaragua and the El Sontule community, located within the Miraflor Nature Reserve. CGE-Nicaragua has been working with the community for over ten years. Program participants stay in the homes of members of the New Dawn women’s cooperative. They are hosted as part of a rural-ecotourism project, where they learn about crops and the process of producing organic coffee.

CGE students and travelers also have the opportunity to hear the stories of these women, whose community and cooperative experienced counterrevolutionary attacks during the Sandanista Revolution. The women of the cooperative say that some of the benefits of the relationship with CGE have been: They shared their personal stories with visitors, including stories of violence and suffering and in this process they have been able to heal their wounds and overcome some of their fears. Similar to some of the comments made by our partners in Mexico, the women express that before they began hosting our groups they were shy about hosting foreigners because they felt they did not have important personal stories. By hosting CGE groups, the women have gained more confidence speaking in public and are also aware of the impact that they have on others. There is now a sense of pride and empowerment and higher levels of self- esteem. Another important result of the relationship has been the establishment of the scholarship fund to help sons and daughters of the women pursue an undergraduate degree. The funds come primarily from CGE travel seminar participants or students.

Diane Tran, Project Manager at Grassroots Solutions, College of St. Scholastica alumna

1) What about your college experience influenced where you are today?
In my current community and professional work, I work to advance policy and social change through advocacy and education. It was during my time at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN that I was able to practice and develop insight into a great deal of the skills I now employ daily – understanding systems, building coalitions, and utilizing collaborative leadership skills. The Benedictine values of community, hospitality, respect, stewardship, and love of learning provided practical grounding for me as I pursued my academic studies and, I believe, were the most important part of the education I received as part of my undergraduate studies.

2) What is the most exciting thing that you do in your job?
I’m a project manager with Grassroots Solutions, a Minneapolis-based consulting firm specializing in grassroots strategy, training, organizing, and evaluation. We work with a variety of national, statewide, and local clients including nonprofits, government and associations, corporations, and candidates. My team works on both electoral and advocacy projects and I’ve been fortunate to engage on issues like promoting the clean energy economy, protecting antibiotic efficacy for human health through changing industrial farming practices, and preserving medical care for the poorest of the poor in Minnesota. I’m lucky to work with great people on behalf of important causes.

3) What book should everybody read, and why?
The Fourth Turning: An American Prophecy, by William Strauss and Neil Howe, was published in 1997, and details the researchers’ theory of American history as a series of recurring cycles. As a student of history, it is fascinating to consider their proposed understanding of people and cultural shifts as part of larger archetypes and natural systems. As a citizen concerned by the partisan divide and political gridlock that seems today’s norm, it is comforting to take the long view that the current political and economic challenges we face are neither unprecedented nor new to the human condition. As they purport, “In nature, the season that is about to come is always the season farthest removed from memory. So too in American history, past and present.”

4) Who or what is inspiring your work these days?
Minnesota has a nationally recognized civic tradition and I’m proud to be a part of contributing to that trend. We Minnesotans vote and volunteer in record numbers and we are concerned about the well-being of our communities. I have served in recent years on the boards of directors for the Citizens League, Kids ‘n Kinship, National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP-MN), the Minnesota Public Health Association, and the Minnesota Women’s Consortium. I volunteer with youth and direct service programs at my church, teach courses on active citizenship for emerging leaders, and am pleased to be a part of the civic infrastructure of our great state.

5) What are you passionate about?
I’m the founding blogger for Minnesota Rising and am engaged in work to build relationships, trust, and a shared vision for the rising Millennial generation in Minnesota. Having been a youth, student, and community organizer, I recognize that young people do not have to wait for some appointed time upon which we can assume the mantle of leadership. If our generation is able to come together now because of our common experiences and a shared admiration for and commitment to Minnesota, we have that much more opportunity to continue our state’s historic legacy of educational attainment, economic vitality, and healthy communities. I invite any and all young Minnesotans interested in joining the discussion to contribute to the “Our Minnesota: Building A State of Trust,” cascading conversations tour and to work with us to develop the collective capacity of this generation for impacting Minnesota’s future.

If you’ve applied for a job recently, you’ve probably looked over that 8½ x 11” summary of your career more times than you can count—and tweaked it just as often—in pursuit of the perfect resume.

But before you add another bullet point, consider this: It’s not always about what you add in—the best changes you can make may lie in what you take out.

The average resume is chock-full of sorely outdated, essentially meaningless phrases that take up valuable space on the page. Eliminate them, and you’ll come off as a better, more substantial candidate—and your resume won’t smack of that same generic, mind-numbing quality found on everyone else’s.

Every word—yes, every word—on that page should be working hard to highlight your talents and skills. If it’s not, it shouldn’t be on there. So grab a red pen, and banish these words from your resume for good.

Career Objective

My first few resumes had a statement like this emblazoned top and center: “Career objective: To obtain a position as a [insert job title here] that leverages my skills and experience as well as provides a challenging environment that promotes growth.”

Experienced

Yawn. This is not only boring, it’s ineffective (and sounds a little juvenile, to boot). The top of your resume is prime real estate, and it needs to grab a hiring manager’s attention with a list of your top accomplishments, not a summary of what you hope to get out of your next position.

You can be “experienced” in something after you’ve done it once—or every day for the past 10 years. So drop this nebulous term and be specific. If, for example, you’re a Client Report Specialist, using a phrase such as “Experienced in developing client reports” is both vague and redundant. But sharing that you “Created five customized weekly reports to analyze repeat client sales activity”—now that gives the reader a better idea of where exactly this so-called experience lies, with some actual results attached.

Also eliminate: seasoned, well-versed

Team Player
If you’ve ever created an online dating profile, you know that you don’t just say that you’re nice and funny—you craft a fun, witty profile that shows it. Same goes for your resume: It’s much more effective to list activities or accomplishments that portray your good qualities in action than to simply claim to have them.

Instead of “team player,” say “Led project team of 10 to develop a new system for distributing reports that reduced the time for managers to receive reports by 25%.” Using a specific example, you show what you can actually accomplish. But simply labeling yourself with a quality? Not so much.

Also eliminate: people person, customer-focused

Dynamic
While resumes are meant to highlight your best attributes, some personality traits are better left to the hiring manager to decide upon for herself. There is a difference between appropriately and accurately describing your work skills and just tooting your own horn. Plus, even the most introverted wallflower will claim to be “dynamic” on a piece of paper because, well, why not? When it comes to resumes, keep the content quantifiable, show tangible results and successes, and wait until the interview to show off your “dynamism,” “enthusiasm,” or “energy.”

Also eliminate: energetic, enthusiastic

References Available Upon Request
All this phrase really does is take up valuable space. If a company wants to hire you, they will ask you for references—and they will assume that you have them. There’s no need to address the obvious (and doing so might even make you look a little presumptuous!). Use the space to give more details about your talents and accomplishments instead.

In a crummy job market with a record number of people applying for the same positions, it takes more than a list of desirable-sounding qualities to warrant an interview. Specific examples pack a punch, whereas anything too dependent on a list of buzzwords will sound just like everyone else’s cookie-cutter resume. So, give your resume a good once-over, and make sure every word on that page is working hard for you.

Reportback: Minnesota Millennials Research Roundtable

In August, Minnesota Rising hosted a Minnesota Millennials Research Roundtable. A small team of core leaders had been researching throughout the summer to discover what other emerging leader groups paralleled Minnesota Rising nationwide, to learn the statistics and research about Millennials across the country, and to gain insight into what local young professionals in the Twin Cities were thinking via some recent focus groups hosted by several Minnesota organizations. Nick Banovetz put together a handy one-pager on the learnings to share with our partners and stakeholders and much of his work was shared during our feature in the October 2011 issue of the Minnesota Business Magazine. The Minnesota Rising 2011 Un/Conference: Building A Network For What’s Next was held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the CoCo coworking and collaborative space in St. Paul, MN. Hosted by and for emerging leaders, the Un/Conference engaged emerging leaders across Minnesota in an energizing day of innovative learning and dialogue, skill-building, and network-building with their peers!

Minnesota Rising was pleased to feature some incredible Open Space breakout session presentations, including Jeff Ochs, who led a session about his new nonprofit concept and entrepreneur-inspiring board game, Snake Oil. The Dropout Economy

Middle-class kids are taught from an early age that they should work hard and finish school. Yet 3 out of 10 students dropped out of high school as recently as 2006, and less than a third of young people have finished college. Many economists attribute the sluggish wage growth in the U.S. to educational stagnation, which is one reason politicians of every stripe call for doubling or tripling the number of college graduates.

But what if the millions of so-called dropouts are onto something? As conventional high schools and colleges prepare the next generation for jobs that won't exist, we're on the cusp of a dropout revolution, one that will spark an era of experimentation in new ways to learn and new ways to live.

It's important to keep in mind that behavior that seems irrational from a middle-class perspective is perfectly rational in the face of straitened circumstances. People who feel obsolete in today's information economy will be joined by millions more in the emerging post-information economy, in which routine professional work and even some high-end services will be more cheaply performed overseas or by machines. This doesn't mean that work will vanish. It does mean, however, that it will take a new and unfamiliar form.

Look at the projections of fiscal doom emanating from the federal government, and consider the possibility that things could prove both worse and better. Worse because the jobless recovery we all expect could be severe enough to starve the New Deal social programs on which we base our life plans. Better because the millennial generation could prove to be more resilient and creative than its predecessors, abandoning old, familiar and broken institutions in favor of new, strange and flourishing ones.

Imagine a future in which millions of families live off the grid, powering their homes and vehicles with dirt-cheap portable fuel cells. As industrial agriculture sputters under the strain of the spiraling costs of water, gasoline and fertilizer, networks of farmers using sophisticated techniques that combine cutting-edge green technologies with ancient Mayan know-how build an alternative food-distribution system. Faced with the burden of financing the decades-long retirement of aging boomers, many of the young embrace a new underground economy, a largely untaxed archipelago of communes, co-ops, and kibbutzim that passively resist the power of the granny state while building their own little utopias.

Rather than warehouse their children in factory schools invented to instill obedience in the future mill workers of America, bourgeois rebels will educate their kids in virtual schools tailored to different learning styles. Whereas only 1.5 million children were homeschooled in 2007, we can expect the number to explode in future years as distance education blows past the traditional variety in cost and quality. The cultural battle lines of our time, with red America pitted against blue, will be scrambled as Buddhist vegan militia members and evangelical anarchist squatters trade tips on how to build self-sufficient vertical farms from scrap-heap materials. To avoid the tax man, dozens if not hundreds of strongly encrypted digital currencies and barter schemes will crop up, leaving an underresourced IRS to play whack-a-mole with savvy libertarian "hacktivists."

Work and life will be remixed, as old-style jobs, with long commutes and long hours spent staring at blinking computer screens, vanish thanks to ever increasing productivity levels. New jobs that we can scarcely imagine will take their place, only they'll tend to be home-based, thus restoring life to bedroom suburbs that today are ghost towns from 9 to 5. Private homes will increasingly give way to cohousing communities, in which singles and nuclear families will build makeshift kinship networks in shared kitchens and common areas and on neighborhood-watch duty. Gated communities will grow larger and more elaborate, effectively seceding from their municipalities and pursuing their own visions of the good life. Whether this future sounds like a nightmare or a dream come true, it's coming.

This transformation will be not so much political as antipolitical. The decision to turn away from broken and brittle institutions, like conventional schools and conventional jobs, will represent a turn toward what military theorist John Robb calls "resilient communities," which aspire to self-sufficiency and independence. The left will return to its roots as the champion of mutual aid, cooperative living and what you might call "broadband socialism," in which local governments take on the task of building high-tech infrastructure owned by the entire community. Assuming today's libertarian revival endures, it's easy to imagine the right defending the prerogatives of state and local governments and also of private citizens — including the weird ones. This new individualism on the left and the right will begin in the spirit of cynicism and distrust that we see now, the sense that we as a society are incapable of solving pressing problems. It will evolve into a new confidence that citizens working in common can change their lives and in doing so can change the world around them.

We see this individualism in the rise of "freeganism" and in the small but growing handful of "cage-free families" who've abandoned their suburban idylls for life on the open road. We also see it in the rising number of high school seniors who take a gap year before college. While the higher-education industry continues to agitate for college for all, many young adults are stubbornly resistant, perhaps because they recognize that for a lot of them, college is an overpriced status marker and little else. In the wake of the downturn, household formation has slowed down. More than one-third of workers under 35 live with their parents.

The hope is that these young people will eventually leave the house when the economy perks up, and doubtless many will. Others, however, will choose to root themselves in their neighborhoods and use social media to create relationships that sustain them as they craft alternatives to the rat race. Somewhere in the suburbs there is an unemployed 23-year-old who is plotting a cultural insurrection, one that will resonate with existing demographic, cultural and economic trends so powerfully that it will knock American society off its axis.

Contribute to the "Our Minnesota" Cascading Conversations Tour!

Over the next two years, "Our Minnesota" will connect people through a cascading conversations tour, which will collect the ideas of thousands of young Minnesotans from across the state through one-on-one conversations. These conversations will spark fun, engaging opportunities for people to discuss their values and visions for Minnesota's future and to share how they could make that future a reality. Over two years, the number of conversations and places in which these conversations occur will grow exponentially. Each person invited to share their ideas will be asked to continue the conversation with another person, growing an ever-expanding network of people who ultimately build "Our Minnesota" together.

Our objective is to strengthen the network and capacity of emerging leaders in Minnesota and to work toward a shared vision for the future of our state. While we cannot develop a strategic plan for our generation, we can be strategic about our intentions for the Minnesota we will create together. The cascading conversations tour is an attempt to discover what we have in common, to learn about what's working in Minnesota that we can build on, and to uncover how we can work individually and collectively to achieve the future we desire. We invite anyone and everyone who thinks this matters to join us in these conversations.
